Northern Michigan is facing some very cold temperatures today, and forecasters say that cold weather will continue throughout the weekend.
Temperatures in some parts of Northern Michigan are hitting well below zero degrees… and when facing temperatures like these, it’s important to keep some winter safety tips in mind.
- Stay Inside. If it’s possible, he easiest way to stay safe in sub-zero temperatures is to simply avoid going into them.
- Limit Your Skin’s Exposure To The Cold. If you have to head outside, try to limit your skin’s exposure to the cold and wind. It’s especially important to keep your hands, feet and face head warm, because most body heat is lost through these areas.
- Bundle Up. Using numerous layers of loose, dry clothing when in the cold is an effective way to keep warm.
- Keep Moving. If you have to spend an extended amount of time in the cold, constant motion will help keep your body warm.
- Take Breaks. If it’s possible, taking regular breaks in a warm area is an easy way to stay warm. It’s especially important to take a break if you feel extremely cold or numb.
- Have a Warm Drink. A warm drink can help warm your body, but it’s important to avoid alcohol and caffeine.
- Concerned? Call a doctor. If you have any concerns about your health after spending time in the cold, it’s very important to contact a doctor, especially if you may be facing a condition like frostbite.
